Sexual healing? Not likely

Monday, January 30, 2012

A new study shows the production of sperm is more biologically taxing than previously thought, and expending energy on it has significant health implications.

In research published in PLoS ONE, Dr Damian Dowling of Monash University's School of Biological Sciences and Professor Leigh Simmons of the University of Western Australia have investigated the trade-off between sperm quality and immunity.

The researchers used the Australian cricket, Teleogryllus oceanicus to prove that the production of quality sperm is expensive and males are strategic about investing energy in the biological process.

Dr Dowling said investigations into life history trade-offs - investment in reproduction versus future reproduction and survival prospects - have historically focused on females.

"This study challenges the traditional view that sex, and sperm production, come cheaply to males. It is typically thought that females must invest heavily into reproduction, whereas males can freely produce millions of high-quality, tiny sperm on demand, with few costs," Dr Dowling said.

"Here we show that the costs are in fact large, and these costs dictate how much effort a male will devote into any given sexual encounter."

The crickets were housed either with sexually immature females, sexually mature females incapable of reproduction, or sexually mature females capable of reproduction. Sperm quality was measured twice and immune function once during the experiment.

Dr Dowling said the male crickets were more likely to produce high quality sperm when housed with sexually mature females with whom they could mate, indicating a strategic investment of energy.

The researchers also found that production of quality sperm appeared to have a negative effect on the crickets' immune systems.

"Males that invested heavily in their sperm paid the price of being more likely to succumb to a bacterial infection. And we are not talking about STDs here - we are talking about how increased investment into the quality of the ejaculate corresponds with general reductions in immune function," Dr Dowling said.

Frenchman killed in armed robbery in Red Sea resort (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? A Frenchman was killed when armed men raided a currency exchange office Saturday in the Egyptian tourist resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on the Red Sea, security officials and the French embassy said.

South Sinai Governor General Khaled Fouda told Reuters that a German national had also been wounded but was in a stable condition in hospital.

The French embassy confirmed a Frenchman had been killed without giving further details.

Sharm el-Sheikh is on the Sinai Peninsula, home to many popular tourist resorts. However, many people own weapons in inland areas of the peninsula, and analysts say the region has become more lawless since an uprising ousted President Hosni Mubarak last year.

(AP Photo/Orange County Register, Bruce Chambers) MAGS OUT; LOS ANGELES TIMES OUT

(AP) ? Seeking to influence other states and Washington, California air regulators passed sweeping auto emission standards Friday that include a mandate to have 1.4 million electric and hybrid vehicles on state roads by 2025.

The California Air Resources Board unanimously approved the new rules that require that one in seven of the new cars sold in the state in 2025 be an electric or other zero-emission vehicle.

The plan also mandates a 75 percent reduction in smog-forming pollutants by 2025, and a 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from today's standards.

Automakers worked with the board and federal regulators on the greenhouse gas mandates in an effort to create one national standard for those pollutants.

"Today's vote ... represents a new chapter for clean cars in California and in the nation as a whole," said Mary Nichols, the board's chairman. "Californians have always loved their cars. We buy a lot of them and drive them. Now we will have cleaner and more efficient cars to love."

California's auto emissions standards are influential and often more strict than federal rules. The state began passing regulations for cleaner cars in the 1960s to help ease some of the world's worst smog, and has since helped spur the auto industry's innovations in emissions-control technology.

Currently 14 other states ? including New York, Washington and Massachusetts ? have adopted California's smog emissions rules as their own.

California has also previously set zero-emissions vehicle mandates, which 10 other states have also currently adopted.

Companies including Ford Motor Corp., Chrysler Group LLC, General Motors Co., Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. and others submitted testimony Thursday supportive of the new standards.

Some of the companies protested the inclusion of a system that will give some automakers credit toward their zero-emission vehicle mandate for exceeding federal greenhouse gas emissions standards in other cars. These credits, which can be used to reduce the number of clean vehicles made, can be used from 2018-2021.

Some called it a loophole that will take hundreds of thousands of clean cars off the road, hurting the emerging market for these vehicles.

"This is a temporary way station," Nichols said about the credits. "But by 2021 all companies will be producing the full complement of zero-emission vehicles."

Trade groups representing auto dealers worried that the new regulations would increase the costs of vehicles for consumers and stifle the industry's growth.

The California New Car Dealers Association and other industry groups representing those who sell cars said the board is overestimating consumer demand for electric vehicles and other so-called "zero-emission vehicles."

Dealers are concerned that the regulations will lead to higher costs in all cars, and say consumers have been slow to warm to electric and other zero-emission vehicles.

The board's research staff disputes the argument from dealers that the mandates for new technology will increase costs for cars. They point to steady increases in hybrid and other sales and argue that fuel cost savings will make up for any vehicle price increase.

"Our research shows a $1,400 to $1,900 car price increase. But over the life of the vehicles, the owners save $6,000 in reduced fuel and maintenance costs," board spokesman David Clegern said.

One of the nation's foremost consumer groups, the Consumers' Union, the policy and advocacy division of Consumer Reports, supported the changes.

The rules will "protect consumers by encouraging the development of cleaner, more efficient cars that save families money, help reduce the American economy's vulnerability to oil price shocks and reduce harmful air pollution," according to a letter from the group.

Too little, too late? Factory jobs making comeback

John Schoen, msnbc.com

Manufacturing accounts for 9 percent of the U.S. workforce, compared with 28 percent in 1960 and 12 percent just a decade ago.

By Allison Linn

President Barack Obama is on the road this week touting a plan to bring jobs back to the United States, in part by bolstering manufacturing here.

It?s no secret that?s a tough challenge.

The United States has lately seen an increase in manufacturing jobs, something Obama noted in his State of the Union address Tuesday. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 330,000 manufacturing jobs have been created over the past two years, bringing the total to nearly 11.8 million as of December.

Still, that is a nearly 2 million short of the?13.7 million manufacturing jobs that existed when the economy went into recession in December 2007. And it?s far fewer than in the late 1970s, when more than 19 million Americans -- out of a much smaller work force -- were employed in manufacturing, which was?seen as a key path to a middle-class life.

Manufacturing may be bouncing back, but it is returning in a far different form.?The recession washed out many inefficent companies, leaving behind?operations that even leaner and more highly automated. That means they can make do?with?fewer workers even as they increase production.

As a recent series of stories in The New York Times has highlighted, successful companies like Apple have prospered largely by mastering a global supply chain that depends on sending work overseas to take advantage of low-cost labor.

Obama is hoping that tax breaks and other incentives will help encourage manufacturers to keep jobs here, or even bring some back. Time will tell whether that is true.

The Wii U officially arriving by this Christmas

Nintendo of America

By Matthew Hawkins

Nintendo, which fired the first official shot of the upcoming console war at E3 last summer, just let loose another bombshell.

Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo, has announced that their follow-up to the Wii, the Wii U, will be available in the United States by the oh-so-important year-end holiday shopping season.?Reuters also reports that other key markets will get the new home system around the same time as well, including Europe, Australia and Japan.

No exact date has been specified, but if Nintendo follows the same pattern that has been established by their previous hardware's debut (the GameCube, the original DS, the Wii, the DSi), it should arrive just a few days or week before Black Friday 2012. Parents, you've been warned.

Thus far, not much else is known, including a final retail price, let alone Nintendo's selection of launch titles. But the fact that it's definitely coming out by year's end is a lot more to chew on when compared to the other guys.

Details regarding Microsoft and Sony's upcoming systems are still virtually nonexistent, at least officially so. Rumor mills for both camps, on the other hand, have been busy; the most interesting recent tidbit regarding the "Xbox 720," as it has been dubbed, is courtesy of Kotaku.

First off, it may adopt Blu-ray discs, which is a format that's proprietary to Sony (and their current console, the PlayStation 3 to be exact), and also have some kind of built-in scheme that prevents the operation of used games. Both sound fairly outlandish and flat-out crazy, for entirely different reasons.

But stranger things are happened, and as with everything, rumors are a sign of the times. Which in Microsoft's case is how DVDs will no longer be a viable option for delivering physical games (it's barely cutting it as is, in some instances), plus how a purely digital distribution platform may not be entirely in the cards as of yet.

Along with the fear of used game sales, and how it has affected everyone's bottom lines, not just Microsoft's. As for the PS4, nothing notable has been said as of late. Though it's a safe bet either one of the two, or perhaps both, will be officially unveiled at this year's E3, partially as a response to the pending arrival of the Wii U.

Cocoa could prevent intestinal pathologies such as colon cancer

Tuesday, January 24, 2012

A new study on living animals has shown for the first time that eating cocoa (the raw material in chocolate) can help to prevent intestinal complaints linked to oxidative stress, including colon carcinogenesis onset caused by chemical substances.

The growing interest amongst the scientific community to identify those foods capable of preventing diseases has now categorized cocoa as a 'superfood'. It has been recognised as an excellent source of phytochemical compounds, which offer potential health benefits.

Headed by scientists from the Institute of Food Science and Technology and Nutrition (ICTAN) and recently published in the Molecular Nutrition & Food Research journal, the new study supports this idea and upholds that cacao consumption helps to prevent intestinal complaints linked to oxidative stress, such as the onset of chemically induced colon carcinogenesis.

"Being exposed to different poisons in the diet like toxins, mutagens and procarcinogens, the intestinal mucus is very susceptible to pathologies," explains Mar?a ?ngeles Mart?n Arribas, lead author of the study and researcher at ICTAN. She adds that "foods like cocoa, which is rich in polyphenols, seems to play an important role in protecting against disease."

The study on live animals (rats) has for the first time confirmed the potential protection effect that flavonoids in cocoa have against colon cancer onset. For eight weeks the authors of the study fed the rats with a cocoa-rich (12%) diet and carcinogenesis was induced.

Possible protection

Doctor Mart?n Arribas outlines that "four weeks after being administered with the chemical compound azoxymethane (AOM), intestinal mucus from premalignant neoplastic lesions appeared. These lesions are called 'aberrant crypt foci' and are considered to be good markers of colon cancer pathogenesis."

The results of the study showed that the rats fed a cocoa-rich diet had a significantly reduced number of aberrant crypts in the colon induced by the carcinogen. Likewise, this sample saw an improvement in their endogenous antioxidant defences and a decrease in the markers of oxidative damage induced by the toxic compound in this cell.

The researchers conclude that the protection effect of cocoa can stop cell-signalling pathways involved in cell proliferation and, therefore, subsequent neoplasty and tumour formation. Lastly, the animals fed with the cocoa-rich diet showed an increase in apoptosis or programmed cell death as a chemoprevention mechanism against the development of the carcinogenesis.

Although more research is required to determine what bioactive compounds in cocoa are responsible for such effects, the authors conclude that a cocoa-rich diet seems capable of reducing induced oxidative stress. It could also have protection properties in the initial stages of colon cancer as it reduces premalignant neoplastic lesion formation.

A not-so-guilty pleasure

Cocoa is one of the ingredients in chocolate. It is one of the richest foods in phenolic compounds, mainly in flavonoids like procyanidins, catechins and epicatechins, which have numerous beneficial biological activities in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and cancer (mainly colorectal cancer).

In fact, compared to other foods with a high flavonoid content, cocoa has a high level of procyanidins with limited bioavailability. These flavonoids are therefore found in their highest concentrations in the intestine where they neutralise many oxidants.

Review: Ex-Beatle longs for Liverpool on new album (AP)

"Ringo 2012," Ringo Starr. (Hip-O/Ume)

One look in the mirror was all it took for ex-Beatle Ringo Starr to find the best producer for his 17th solo record, "Ringo 2012," Starr claims. Unfortunately, looks can be deceiving and Starr might have done better shopping around someone to make this release more interesting.

As it stands, "Ringo 2012" is equal parts reflection and rehash. The subject matter, mostly composed by others, is mostly fond memories of days gone by for Starr, with a bit a make-love-not-war ethos sprinkled in for good measure. When presented with Starr's dry vocal approach, most tracks lack the required luster to make this album stand out.

"Ringo 2012" is blues, rock and a touch of honky-tonk. The melodies aren't bad. They're just too well-traveled. From the first track "Anthem" to the final salute in "Slow Down," there's not much here to show us that Starr has challenged himself beyond a formulaic delivery. "Wings" is a nice song, but he's already recorded it years ago on his sixth album.

There are some moments when the fit is fine, as on "Rock Island Line." This bluesy standard made its way to Starr by way of Lead Belly and so-called skiffle bands in Liverpool, England, where Starr paid his early dues in the Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group. The song gets a nice boost from blues guitar standout Kenny Wayne Shepard, who sizzles throughout.

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: On "In Liverpool," Starr gives us a glimpse of his life in the town of his youth, walking to the Iron Door club to play with Rory Storm. You can feel his voice warm as he reminisces about his pre-Beatles days. Truth be told, there's very little on this album to reference his breathless, chart-topping Fab Four time. Seems like Starr appreciates an earlier time in his career a little more, and it seems earnest here.

Dalglish demands response in cup semi vs. City

By STUART CONDIE

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:23 a.m. ET Jan. 23, 2012

LONDON (AP) -Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish wants a determined response from the players he lambasted for their weekend performances when his team takes on Manchester City on Wednesday for a place in the League Cup final.

Dalglish tore into his players after Saturday's woeful 3-1 loss at relegation-threatened Bolton and demanded a much improved display in the semifinals at Anfield.

With the club just one step away from a first final of any kind since the 2007 Champions League, Dalglish said his players were distracted by the match against City. Now they have the chance to show it was worth it.

"I was annoyed and disappointed, more so about the attitude, the commitment and the approach to the game," Dalglish said. "That wasn't us. All season we've been very complimentary about the way the boys have gone about their work but I don't think you could say that on Saturday. Their approach to the game was poor.

"Whether they had their minds on the next two games, I don't know. But every game we play is a very important game."

Liverpool leads City 1-0 from the first leg and the Anfield crowd is set to be in full voice for the visit of the Premier League leaders.

"Now we will get our minds on the Man City game," Dalglish said. "We have to solve our own problems. What do we do to put it right? Same as we always do: we work."

City is on a high after a dramatic 3-2 win over Tottenham on Sunday, but manager Roberto Mancini is keen for his players to forget about the Premier League for a couple of days and focus on what would be a second cup final in two seasons.

Although City looks to have nudged Spurs out of the title race, Mancini believes his team can further improve.

"His words in the dressing room were very profound," assistant manager David Platt said. "Regardless of the fact that it is a great victory against someone who is up there as well, he is not happy at the gift of a goal and the lapse in concentration to allow it to go in.

"He has made that clear in no uncertain terms."

In the other semifinal, Crystal Palace leads second-tier rival Cardiff 1-0 ahead of their second-leg match on Tuesday.

Cardiff, which is third in the League Championship and challenging for promotion, got a taste of cup final action when the Welsh side lost 1-0 to Portsmouth in the 2008 FA Cup final.

The players want another.

"All of the lads know how much it would mean and we're going to drive on together to try and reach Wembley," Cardiff captain Mark Hudson told the club's website. "We're fully focused on what we need to do and we're going out there to play with freedom and get the result."

San Francisco 49ers: Win or lose, they're back

San Francisco 49ers, after a decade of irrelevance, are in the NFC championship game, on the brink of the Super Bowl. Welcome back, San Francisco 49ers.

This playoff season seems bent on chucking every story line the NFL had going in 2011.

The Packers? perfect season? Out. Tebow magic? Done, for now. The firing of Tom Coughlin?? We can definitely count that out, at least for another year (New York fans have a short memory, but beating the mighty Packers in Lambeau field at least ensures the Giants head coach gets to show up for work again in August).? Peyton Manning?s position at the top of the Manning hierarchy?? Even that?s in question, as a slew of analysts are now suggesting that little brother Eli might have been the best Manning all along.

Meanwhile, the barely noticed San Francisco 49ers had their best season in over a decade and emerged victorious from perhaps the best game of the playoffs against the Saints. The team by the bay has made it to the NFC championship, one win away from the Super Bowl.

Safe to say, no one really saw the 49ers coming. Why would they? San Francisco hadn?t had a winning record since 2002. Their biggest roster change from 2010?s 6-10 season was at head coach. Jim Harbaugh was an NFL coaching rookie, too, fresh from Stanford University. Given the team he was inheriting, a ?rebuilding year? would have been reasonable.

The 49ers most recognizable player? Quarterback Alex Smith, who has had a fraught relationship with the 49ers since the team drafted him first overall in the 2005 NFL Draft.? He?s been booed and benched constantly throughout his seven seasons; until last week, the highest praise anyone could muster for Smith concerned his ?game management? skills. But he clinched the NFC Championship for San Francisco last Saturday, with a game-winning touchdown pass to Vernon Davis with nine seconds left.

The rest of the 49ers roster has blossomed in the same way. Bucking the trend of most offense-heavy playoff squads this year, the 49ers have the best rush defense in the league, as well as a dangerous running game led by running back Frank Gore. The New York Giants are playing like a dream, but it will take their best to beat San Francisco at Candlestick Park.

Even if they do, the 49ers are beginning to look like their old selves again. There was a time, not so very long ago, when the franchise?s storied tradition and decades of domination garnered the same fear and respect as, say, the Patriots or the Packers do now. ?With five winning Super Bowl appearances, 16 consecutive seasons of 10-plus wins, and two Hall of Fame quarterbacks in a row (Joe Montana and Steve Young), the 49ers dynasty of the 1980s and '90s was so dominant that it has little chance of being duplicated anytime soon.

Their reign at the top of the NFL seemed endless in both directions: If you grew up in the 1990?s, Joe Montana was a word problem in your math workbook. Steve Young and wide receiver Jerry Rice were doing a funny Visa commercial on your television.

These 49ers aren?t quite there yet. But other teams are justifiably scared of the red and gold again, and that?s a good place to start.

Obama's State of the Union: Jobs, re-election time

(AP) ? Vilified by the Republicans who want his job, President Barack Obama will stand before the nation Tuesday night determined to frame the election-year debate on his terms, using his State of the Union address to outline a lasting economic recovery that will "work for everyone, not just a wealthy few."

As his most powerful chance to make a case for a second term, the prime-time speech carries enormous political stakes for the Democratic incumbent who presides over a country divided about his performance and pessimistic about the nation's direction. He will try to offer a stark contrast with his opponents by offering a vision of fairness and opportunity for everyone.

In a preview Saturday, Obama said in a video to supporters that the speech will be an economic blueprint built around manufacturing, energy, education and American values.

He is expected to announce ideas to make college more affordable and to address the housing crisis still hampering the economy three years into his term, people familiar with the speech said. Obama will also propose fresh ideas to ensure that the wealthy pay more in taxes, reiterating what he considers a matter of basic fairness, the officials said.

His policy proposals will be less important than what Obama hopes they all add up to: a narrative of renewed American security with him at the center, leading the fight.

"We can go in two directions," Obama said in the campaign video. "One is toward less opportunity and less fairness. Or we can fight for where I think we need to go: building an economy that works for everyone, not just a wealthy few."

That line of argument is intended to tap directly into concerns of voters who think America has become a nation of income inequality, with rules rigged to help the rich. The degree to which Obama or his eventual Republican opponent can better connect with millions of hurting Americans is expected to determine November's presidential election.

Obama released his video hours ahead of the South Carolina primary, where Republican candidates fought in the latest fierce contest to become his general election rival.

The White House knows Obama is about to get his own stage to outline a re-election vision, but carefully. The speech is supposed to an American moment, not a campaign event.

Obama didn't mention national security or foreign policy in his preview, and he is not expected to break ground on either one in his speech.

He will focus on the economy and is expected to promote unfinished parts of his jobs plan, including the extension of a payroll tax cut that is soon to expire.

Whatever Obama proposes is likely to face long odds in a deeply divided Congress.

More people than not disapprove of Obama's handling of the economy, and he is showing real vulnerability among the independent voters who could swing the election. Yet he will step into the moment just as the economy is showing life. The unemployment rate is still at a troubling 8.5 percent, but at its lowest rate in nearly three years. Consumer confidence is up.

By giving a sneak peek to millions of supporters on his email list, Obama played to his Democratic base and sought to generate an even larger audience for Tuesday's address. He is unlikely to getter a bigger stage all year.

More people watched last year's State of the Union than tuned in to see Obama accept the Democratic presidential nomination in Denver in 2008.

The foundation of Obama's speech is the one he gave in Kansas last month, when he declared that the middle class was at a make-or-break moment and he railed against "you're on your own" economics of the Republican Party. His theme then was about a government that ensures people get a fair shot to succeed.

The State of the Union will be the details to back that up.

But even so, the speech will still be a framework ? part governing, part inspiration.

The details will be rolled out in full over the next several weeks, as part of Obama's next budget proposal and during his travels, which will allow him more media coverage.

On national security, Obama will ask the nation to reflect with him on a momentous year of change, including the end of the war in Iraq, the killing of al-Qaida terrorist leader Osama bin Laden and the Arab Spring protests, with people clamoring for freedom. He is expected to note the troubles posed by Iran and Syria without offering new positions about them.

Despite low expectations for legislation this year, Obama will offer short-term ideas that would require action from Congress. For now, the main looming to-do item is an extension of a payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits, both due to expire by March.

His travel schedule following his speech, to politically important regions, offers clues to the policies he was expected to unveil.

Both Phoenix and Las Vegas have been hard hit by foreclosures. Denver is where Obama outlined ways of helping college students deal with school loan debt. Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Detroit are home to a number of manufacturers. And Michigan was a major beneficiary of the president's decision to intervene to rescue the American auto industry.

Republican leaders in Congress say Obama has made the chances of cooperation even dimmer just over the last several days. He enraged Republicans by installing a consumer watchdog chief by going around the Senate, which had blocked him, and then rejected a major oil pipeline project the GOP has embraced.

Obama is likely, once again, to offer ways in which a broken Washington must work together. Yet that theme seems but a dream given the gridlock he has been unable to change.

The address remains an old-fashioned moment of national attention; 43 million people watched it on TV last year. The White House website will offer a live stream of the speech, promising extra wrinkles for people who watch it there, and then invite people to send in questions to administration officials through social media such as Twitter and Facebook.

Obama's campaign is also organizing and promoting parties around the nation for people to watch the speech.

US files charges against Megaupload in 'largest copyright case'

US prosecutors say that the video-sharing site Megaupload.com cost the US entertainment industry $500 million. Online activists worry the US case could stifle Internet freedoms around the world.

In New Zealand, police had to cut through an iron door of a safe room to get their fugitive, Kim Dotcom, the founder of an Internet-based video sharing site called Megaupload.com.

Mr. Dotcom (a German citizen born as Kim Schmitz), along with six of his colleagues, has been charged with criminal copyright infringement, racketeering, and money laundering.

Meanwhile, a worldwide network of hackers took up the battle on behalf of Megaupload.com, launching a massive denial-of-service attack on several entertainment websites, as well as on the US Department of Justice website.

The mayhem and legal proceedings are just the opening shots in what US prosecutors are calling the largest criminal copyright case ever, and involves $500 million in damages to the entertainment industry, as well as complex legal issues of what constitutes copyright infringement in the age of YouTube, Facebook ?liking,? and DVD burners. And the legal battle is likely to reverberate around the world, as countries contemplate their own laws over intellectual property rights.

If found guilty, Dotcom and his Megaupload associates ? who are thought to have earned up to $175 million by selling advertisements on their website ?could face 20 years in prison.

The Washington Post quoted Sen. Patrick Leahy ? author of the controversial Protect IP Act (PIPA) ? praising the arrest of Dotcom.

?Today?s action by the Department of Justice against the leaders of Megaupload.com shows what law enforcement can do to protect American intellectual property that is stolen through domestic Web sites,? the Post quoted Leahy saying.

The New York Times quoted?Ira P. Rothken, a lawyer for Megaupload, as saying in a Times phone interview, ?Megaupload believes the government is wrong on the facts, wrong on the law.?

Leaked Sony 2012 smartphone roadmap reveals potentially birdy, minty flagships

Grab a bowl of salt and start pinching, folks. A sales report for Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications India is floating around the internet that's purportedly packing a list of 2012's planned handsets along with suggested pricing. The 11-strong list is in Rupees, and whilst we've reproduced it in full above, it's worth bearing in mind that cellphones in the "developing world" (no offense intended) are often more expensive than the equivalent handset in the US (the 16GB iPhone 4S, for example costs $650 in the US but $882 in India). The "Pepper" codename seems to tie in with what we've been expecting, but the Nypon blurrycam images we've seen don't follow the company's 2012 design language -- so we doubt they're real. That said, it's clear that a pair of flagships will arrive in the second half of the year: the code-names don't shed too much light, since Hayabusa means "Peregrine Falcon" and Mint -- well, we can hardly expect Sony to produce a phone with a built-in breath freshener, can we?

PFT: Flacco downplays Reed's critical remarks

Divisional Playoffs - New Orleans Saints v San Francisco 49ersGetty Images

Exactly 30 years ago, coach Bill Walsh transformed a perennially mediocre-at-best 49ers franchise into a juggernaut that would capture five Super Bowl titles in 14 seasons.

After 17 years without a return to the NFL title game, one of the key members of Walsh?s 49ers predicts a return to glory under coach Jim Harbaugh.

?I see these guys doing some wonderful things this decade ? I think Jim will do great job of creating another dynasty and winning some Super Bowls,? Craig recently told the San Francisco Chronicle, via NFL.com.? ?I foresee us winning some Super Bowls in the next decade, if not this year then in the years ahead.? Wherever he goes, he wins.? He has the secret sauce, and I?m loving his flavor.?

(Look, it would be way too easy to make a juvenile remark at this point, including but not limited to ?that?s what she said.?? Instead, I?ll just sit here and wonder how close Craig came to calling back Eric Branch of the Chronicle and begging him to pull that last sentence.)

?Jim Harbaugh is an amazing guy, an innovator, amazing coach, a leader,? Craig added.? ?When you get players to buy into your system the way he has, you?re going to have success.?

Amen to that.? We thought Harbaugh would make enough of a difference to win the NFC West, but we never dreamed he?d take the team to a 14-3 record and a berth in the NFC title game, especially since he had only seven weeks to get his team ready.

Some think that Jeff Fisher avoided the Dolphins for fear of competing directly with Bill Belichick and the Patriots.? In the end, Fisher may have wished he picked Belichick as his arch-rival instead of Harbaugh and the 49ers.

Rangers reach deal with Japanese ace Darvish (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Major League Baseball's (MLB) Texas Rangers agreed to terms on a six-year deal with Japanese pitching ace Yu Darvish just as the negotiating window was set to close, the team said on Wednesday.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed but a report on MLB's website said the contract is worth about $60 million.

Darvish is expected to travel to Texas later this week and be introduced during a news conference at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, the team said in a statement.

The Rangers posted a bid in excess of $51 million last month just to land exclusive negotiating rights with Darvish and had until 5 p.m. ET (2200 GMT) on Wednesday to reach a deal or else he would play in Japan for 2012.

The 25-year-old pitcher has spent his entire professional career with the Nippon Ham Fighters of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball Pacific League and is a strikeout specialist, boasting a 96 mph fastball.

Considered the best pitcher in Japanese baseball, the two-times Pacific League most valuable player has a 93-38 career record with a 1.99 earned run average over seven seasons.

The flame-throwing right-hander helped the Fighters win the 2006 Japan Series and has been the ace of Japan's national team, helping his country to victory at the 2009 World Baseball Classic and a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Born to an Iranian father and Japanese mother, the 6ft-5in (1.96m) starter has never had a losing season and enjoys an overall winning percentage of .710.

The American League champions Rangers have loaded up on Japanese pitching talent with Darvish joining relievers Yoshinori Tateyama and Koji Uehara on the Rangers 40-man roster.

Cyprus air traffic controllers to strike (AP)

NICOSIA, Cyprus ? Air traffic controllers in Cyprus walked off the job for four hours on Wednesday to protest a two-year government worker wage freeze and other deficit-reduction measures.

The latest strike action on the island nation comes in the wake of last month's package of cost cuts and tax increases, which are intended to boost investor confidence. Cyprus is struggling to convince investors it has a strategy to deal with its problems and its credit rating was cut last week to junk status by the Standard & Poor's ratings agency largely because of the country's sizable financial sector's heavy exposure to Greek debt.

Airport spokesman Adamos Aspris said the stoppage between 1300 and 1700 local time affected more than 5,000 passengers on 38 flights to and from the island's two airports.

The Air Traffic Controllers' Union President Giorgos Georgiou defended the action, arguing that his members have been unfairly grouped with other government workers.

Since the salaries of the air traffic controllers come from levies airlines pay the government to use Cyprus-controlled airspace, the union says they should be exempt from austerity measures aimed at reducing the size of the public sector that takes up to a third of all government spending.

Georgiou said the government's measures, that also include lower overtime pay and higher contribution to social insurance, would shrink controllers' take home pay by up to 40 percent, and rejected criticism that the union is holding the economy hostage.

Communications Minister Efthymios Flourentzou said he wants arbitrators to adjudicate the dispute.

Air traffic controllers staged a 12-hour strike last month to protest the measures. Another four-hour work stoppage is planned for next week.

Largely unable to borrow from international markets, the island is relying on a euro4.5 billion ($5.8 billion), low-interest Russian loan to meet its financial needs for this year.

Vietnam PM orders probe into violent land eviction (AP)

HANOI, Vietnam ? Vietnam's prime minister called for an investigation Tuesday into a guerrilla-style clash between authorities and farmers who tried to fend off a land eviction by laying homemade land mines and firing improvised shotguns.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung issued the order into the high-profile case after six police and army officers were injured in the Jan. 5 incident in the northern port city of Haiphong.

State media have reported that Doan Van Vuon, 49, had long been at odds with authorities who proposed evicting him from 19 hectares (47 acres) of swamp land leased in 1993 on a 14-year contract. He had converted the area into a seafood farm.

About 100 police officers and soldiers wearing bulletproof vests and riot gear advanced to forcibly seize the land when the attack allegedly began, according to the reports. Two of them were injured when they stepped on a land mine, and the others suffered gunshot wounds.

Vuon, his two brothers and a nephew were later arrested for attempted murder. Vuon allegedly planned the attack, but he was not at the scene when the violence broke out. His relatives fled when police moved in on the house, state media said.

Vuon's wife, Nguyen Thi Thuong, was quoted as saying the family resisted the local government's decision to take the land because they invested all their savings into the farm. The government ordered the eviction without compensation. One of brother's houses on the land also was flattened after the incident took place, but it's unclear who was to blame.

The case has attracted extensive coverage in state-controlled media and Internet blogs, which have criticized the attack by the farmers but also questioned whether authorities had the right to use force to evict the family.

The incident also has stoked heated debate over whether farmers should be allowed to extend their land leases, many of which are set to expire next year. Vietnam first introduced its land laws in 1993, granting many of the farmers 20-year leases on their fields. In Vietnam all land belongs to the state and people only have the right to use it.

Land disputes are the main source of complaints and protests in the country.
