Trying to figure out how the season will shape out after one game is like trying to figure out how a relationship will end after one night. Don't go running off to Vegas. The feelings will change, especially considering the general strangeness of the lockout-dominated offseason. There did seem to be a bit of a continuity advantage for teams that retained their quarterbacks and coaches, but nothing overwhelming. The 49ers, led by new coach Jim Harbaugh, beat the Seahawks, but then, the Seahawks had a new QB and the Niners didn't. The Bengals, with a new QB, beat the Browns, but the Browns had a new coach. The only two teams (three if you count Minnesota) with both a new head coach and a new quarterback lost, but all of them were competitive and could have easily won. So none of this shit means shit.

Or almost none. There were a few things from yesterday that could play into the narrative for the entire season.

One, the entire Colts franchise revolved around Peyton Manning far more than anyone could have imagined. He served not only as the team's best player, but he was also the offensive coordinator, defensive consultant, motivational speaker, and spiritual guide. When something happens on a practice field or in meetings, the eyes of the youngsters fall on the veterans. In Indy, all eyes were on Peyton always. His word was the word of God, and with God now gone for at least half the year, Indianapolis is Sodom and Gomorrah.

Chicago kicked the shit out of a well-prepared Atlanta Falcons team, and the Bears appeared to have been motivated by the disappointing end to last season. The unwarranted heat that Jay Cutler took in the media also seems to have lit a fire under his ass, and maybe it even endeared him to his teammates. The man tore his MCL, and the football world didn't believe him. That type of collective ignorance can unite a team and put some things in perspective.

The modern NFL is constructed by the media, so much so that some players buy into the media narratives, affecting the chemistry of the team. Chicago's entire team is solid, and now that the Bears know just how full of shit the story line is, they can get to work, with an us-vs.-them mentality.

The season will not be won in the first week, or the fourth, or the ninth. As the old adage goes, it's not a sprint; it's a marathon. But the experts lead us to believe the opposite as they go around on the weekly carousel, pumping the egos of football men up and down. The sprinter who closes his eyes and enjoys the music of a solid three-game start, settling into a narcissistic slumber, will wake up in Week 9 with a 4-5 record to find his admirers have moved on.

It's dangerous territory, getting too high too early. The NFL, proxy soap opera for dudes, needs radical highs and lows to sell itself. The Dallas Cowboys are a perfect example of a team that will never be consistent because they're obsessed with their own image. It takes too much of their time and energy to manage. Each week, they are either dead and buried or exalted, and they swing back and forth between the two, afraid of what it would mean to be neither. Turn on the television this morning, and the Steelers are dead and buried, too. So are the Colts. So are the Chiefs. So is Matt Ryan.

After tonight, there'll be a few more burials. Each week is a totally exclusive saga, seemingly unrelated to the season as a whole. And that's why we all love it. But on the inside, the weekly crowning of a new king adds a dimension that is terribly difficult to navigate.

Because winning in the NFL is hard enough as it is. Every week coaches are having to reconfigure their teams because of injuries, and if they don't have a solid crew of backups, they will not win late in the season?or even early in the season, as we saw with St. Louis. Philly was very beatable, but the St. Louis offense fell flat without Steven Jackson. They need to have a plan in case of his inevitable demise, but it seems they may not. Indy sure didn't have one for Peyton. But then, how could you use a high draft pick on a young quarterback prospect when Peyton hasn't missed a start in 43 years?

Considering all of this, my hope is that a few teams that have dealt with shittiness in past years will break out this season. Based on yesterday's performances by the Lions and the Bills, that's a possibility. Who wouldn't want to see both of those teams playing in January while the Steelers and Patriots had losing seasons and Bill Belichick got fired? (Not Mike Tomlin, he's cool.)

When all is said and done, and you can take this one to Vegas, it will be Ryan Fitzpatrick hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in February, having narrowly beaten a resilient Lions team in Super Bowl XLVI?held in godless Gomorrah, Ind.?and once-venerated teams and coaches will scatter the roadside, left for dead by the Trey Wingos and Mike Florios, who will be telling you they told you so.

I?ve always wondered about the people who don?t give back to their community. I think many more people would be interested in giving back,?but perhaps they don?t know where to look for volunteer opportunities,?or they feel they don?t have time, or they don?t even have enough money. I thought that I?d like to help those people get some inspiration, perhaps even give them a gentle push, because I feel helping out others is one of the most important actions a human being can take. So, I?m going to tell you about my experience volunteering, and what you can do to help others, even if you don?t have much money, time, or energy.

When I lost my full-time job almost 2 years ago, one of the many things that worried me was the thought of how my volunteering and annual donations was going to be effected by my job loss. I found new volunteer jobs that were closer to home. I made sure we still bought one family membership at a local nonprofit, like The Detroit Zoo, The Henry Ford Museum, or The Detroit Institute of Arts. Not only is the pass a tax deduction, but?we use it often, for a day of family fun. I donate all sorts of things to charities, from new books to gently used toys, good clothes to older electronics and furniture. I even collect all of the free toothpaste, toothbrushes, mini lotions, shampoos, face cleaner samples, etc. that I receive all year and give them to homeless shelters or rape crisis centers, so people can make sure they have those items when they need them.?As someone who used to deliver rape kits to the children?s section?of emergency rooms, as I was told most rapes that come into the ER?s are children, you?d understand why I compulsively do?this. I still make sure to make it a point to give something during the holidays, because as a child and teenager, people gave me free Christmas presents, paid for my meals, or even paid for me to attend summer camp and other fun events.?I write blog posts like this one, or?write letters on behalf of charities all the time, sometimes without those charities even realizing I?m helping them out. I feel it is my duty to help other people in need, especially because?I have the time, the means, the brains, and the desire to do it.

I started volunteering when I was 12 years-old. My best friend and I loved children, and we were always babysitting or playing with younger neighborhood strays (kids whose moms went to work and left them unattended or with their older, bad sibling babysitters all day), so when we heard?her church was looking for help with their summer vacation bible school, we signed up. I LOVED it, and it gave me the courage to apply for my first job working with children when I was 15. I loved my Parks and Recreation, and I spent a total of 8 summers getting paid to work with emotionally impaired kids at various parks, playgrounds and summer camps. My friends all loved my job too, and they would come and play at my parks, even bringing their younger siblings and the kids they got paid to babysit. That volunteer job formed who I became as an adult?because?I?have a business degree in Public Administration with minors in?Recreation and Community Development, and I?ve spent years volunteering at a variety of nonprofits and organizations, or just doing good deeds to help others, like making a stranger smile or feel at ease.

Here I am hamming it up with my high school science project, my rooster Thor, who I made sure to donate to a semi-local farm. I also managed to get most of my classmates to donate their birds along with mine.

I didn?t stop volunteering my time once I started getting paid to love and play with children?I went above and beyond with the kids I worked with on the playgrounds. I realized many of them were growing up like I did?they had no money to go on field trips, no lunch to eat all day, and sadly, I had a few kids ages 4-8 who crossed major roads by themselves to get to my park. I created a system where good parents would?pack a little extra in their child?s lunch, and those kids would share with the ones who couldn?t go home to eat since their parent(s) were at work. I asked older kids to start walking younger kids back and forth to the parks, and at the age of 15, I discovered my gift of getting people to do things by going door to door asking businesses in the area to donate items like free ice cream, free mini golf, free toys, free paper to print flyers, and free supplies, space and water?so we could have car washes to raise money for big field trips. I know a made a difference in those kids lives, not only because you could see it in their eyes, but because as an adult, I ran into one of those kids and he told me, then he proceeded to go buy me lunch.

Now, I realize not everyone thinks of starting their kids volunteering early. But, I think this is the best time for people to learn how to give back, so my own step-daughter volunteered several summers?at her local library. There are so many places kids can?volunteer in middle school, and church is one of them. So?are recreation departments, libraries, schools, animal shelters and a variety of nonprofits, homeless shelters and food banks. You can even expose your children to the idea of helping others early on, by participating in charity events as a family like 5K Walk/Runs, buying t-shirts from nonprofits for you and your kids to wear to raise awareness,?volunteering in your children?s school, like I once did, or you can even build houses together like my friends B and A do. I loved hearing how my friend?s husband built a house with his co-worker, then just started doing it on his own, and then eventually asked his family to join him. Like my friend?s husband, if you volunteer, you can come home from your volunteer job?and tell your family what you did, showing them brochures, or photographs, if you work as?a?volunteer photographer like I do. I?ve actually read newsletter articles out loud to my stepson about the trips sick kids get to take because of the money and time I donate to a charity, which in turn helps my Autism Spectrum child understand?empathy easier. Doing just one good thing for one person in your community goes a long way, so why not let me know all of the things you do to help out your community?

Ultra high precision analyses of some of the oldest rock samples on Earth by researchers at the University of Bristol provides clear evidence that the planet's accessible reserves of precious metals are the result of a bombardment of meteorites more than 200 million years after the Earth was formed. The research is published today in Nature.

During the formation of the Earth, molten iron sank to its centre to make the core. This took with it the vast majority of the planet's precious metals ? such as gold and platinum. In fact, there are enough precious metals in the core to cover the entire surface of the Earth with a four metre thick layer.

The removal of gold to the core should leave the outer portion of the Earth bereft of bling. However, precious metals are tens to thousands of times more abundant in the Earth's silicate mantle than anticipated. It has previously been argued that this serendipitous over-abundance results from a cataclysmic meteorite shower that hit the Earth after the core formed. The full load of meteorite gold was thus added to the mantle alone and not lost to the deep interior.

To test this theory, Dr Matthias Willbold and Professor Tim Elliott of the Bristol Isotope Group in the School of Earth Sciences analysed rocks from Greenland that are nearly four billion years old, collected by Professor Stephen Moorbath of the University of Oxford. These ancient rocks provide a unique window into the composition of our planet shortly after the formation of the core but before the proposed meteorite bombardment.

The researchers determined the tungsten isotopic composition of these rocks. Tungsten (W) is a very rare element (one gram of rock contains only about one ten-millionth of a gram of tungsten) and, like gold and other precious elements, it should have entered the core when it formed. Like most elements, tungsten is comprised of several isotopes, atoms with the same chemical characteristics but slightly different masses. Isotopes provide robust fingerprints of the origin of material and the addition of meteorites to the Earth would leave a diagnostic mark on its W isotope composition.

Dr Willbold observed a 15 parts per million decrease in the relative abundance of the isotope 182W between the Greenland and modern day rocks. This small but significant change is in excellent agreement with that required to explain the excess of accessible gold on Earth as the fortunate by-product of meteorite bombardment.

Dr Willbold said: "Extracting tungsten from the rock samples and analysing its isotopic composition to the precision required was extremely demanding given the small amount of tungsten available in rocks. In fact, we are the first laboratory world-wide that has successfully made such high-quality measurements."

The impacting meteorites were stirred into the Earth's mantle by gigantic convection processes. A tantalising target for future work is to study how long this process took. Subsequently, geological processes formed the continents and concentrated the precious metals (and tungsten) in ore deposits which are mined today.

Dr Willbold continued: "Our work shows that most of the precious metals on which our economies and many key industrial processes are based have been added to our planet by lucky coincidence when the Earth was hit by about 20 billion billion tonnes of asteroidal material."
